21 Deep Breaths
Relaxation Excercise

Objective: To bring you to a centered, relaxed state.*

  1. Get in a comfortable position, close your eyes and take 3 deep cleansing breaths. Allow yourself to relax and go into an altered state (hypnosis).

  2. Take another deep breath…relax deeply…and as you do…allow yourself to go even deeper.

  3. Say this to yourself: “I am about to take 21 deep breaths. The effect of this will be equal to 4 or 5 hours of relaxing, refreshing sleep.”

  4. Repeat again to yourself: “I am about to take 21 deep breaths. The effect of this will be equal to 4 or 5 hours of relaxing, refreshing sleep.”

  5. Now begin to take your 21 deep breaths, starting at 21 and counting down to zero. Count each breath, breathing slowly and rhythmically.

  6. When you’ve finished your 21 deep breaths, come back to waking consciousness at your own speed by counting yourself from 1 to 5 and opening your eyes. Do this as many times as necessary to come back to a wide awake state.

*Remember, this is not a substitute for getting a good, restful night’s sleep, but it can be used as a supplement to your sleep when needed.
